How safe are Debian updates

Okay, I am an ISPConfig n00b, so I just want to ask before I screw anything up.

Is running a "apt-get upgrade" safe on my Debian 5 system? I have installed ISPConfig3 via the Perfect Server documentation, and I am very happy with it.

Are there any updates that I need to worry about causing problems with my system? (such as apache/MyDNS/postfix)

What should I back up before running the "apt-get upgrade"?

    Thank you,

Well to be honest I never do an backup explicitly before doing an update, anyway I backup my machine every night + 4 times a day an mysql backup.

I'd recommend dist-upgrade instead of just upgrade as it resolves necessary dependencies necessary for updates more in depth.

I use Debian since version 3 now version 5 on the same machines, and i've never had any problems with updating/upgrading.

I am using version 4 and find no problem in or after upgrading.
