Hello all, I have just installed ubuntu studio 9.04 on my laptop, at the point of setup of my network during the install it had some trouble connecting and started asking for ip addresses that i did not have access to at that point... My question is...How do I now setup my wifi as i can't access the internet!!! anyone help please
Does wired networking work? What's the output of Code: ifconfig ? Do you have a DHCP server in your network?
hi & thanks for responding, yes my wired network is fine...just wifi not connecting, my ifconfig results: $ ifconfig lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:180 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:180 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:13984 (13.9 KB) TX bytes:13984 (13.9 KB) wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:22:fa:4e:3c:dc UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) wlan0:avahi Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:22:fa:4e:3c:dc inet addr:169.254.8.61 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 wmaster0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-22-FA-4E-3C-DC-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) Any ideas???
I guess your WLAN is encrypted? Did you select the right method (WEP, WPA, etc.), and did you provide the right key/password?
I made a tutorial for WPA if you wish to use it. I don't think this will work for WEP key, but as it is a very weak security I suggesst you move to WPA / WPA2 if possible. http://howtoforge.com/how-to-connect-to-a-wpa-wifi-using-command-lines-on-debian This should work perfectly fine on any debian based distro including ubuntu since it doesn't use specific software except the WPA module.
