I've used PHP for over seven years now to develop web applications. Time has come to change that and I'm playing with thoughts which language to choose. Have you got personal experiences with these three? Can you recommend one or compare web app development effectivness? I have already did some research, but what I found was unsatisfactory. Thanks for any insight.
As perl was (imho) never a programming language with the focus for webapps, I'd just kind of wipe it out of this comparison and stick to php vs. ruby (on rails), as both of them had the webapp stuff as focus. Perl is pretty awesome but from my personal experience it makes some things harder to implement (at least for me) as it would do with php. Maybe the more you discuss this tomic, the more dogmatic / philosophic it will get So with a concrete goal of what do develop you might get more helpfull answers. But just to have an idea maybe something like this can help you a bit more: http://www.oreillynet.com/ruby/blog/2007/01/php_vs_ruby_on_rails_an_evolu.html
Thanks for the reply. I was personally thinkink that perl was not primarily used for developing webapps. However I heard from few sides, that several company in-house applications are built that way. But nevermind. Do you think, that python is unusable at all? Regarding ruby, I have strong feeling I'll have no support on server hosting. But if it's worth it, I can manage to persuade boss.
perl is imba when used for small daemons, cron scripts etc etc .. i won't recommend it using it for web .. stick with php, or try ruby
I have looked around and found out few python webapp development "kits". So there remains a question - ruby or python. Php is no longer the option. But I will give it a try and choose what suit's the best. Thanks
Both python and ruby are good. but python been there more than ruby. Ruby is still new. i would go for python or java. It can host freely on Google App Engine, and it is free....
