I have Debian (new) installed and I am trying to get X Windows to run. When I start the program all I see is a garbled screen of colors. I have an onboard S3 Trio 64V2 video chip with 2mb of memory.

I am new at this and have not used Linux for many years. The following is a copy of my config file.

    # XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
    # (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
    # package.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following commands as root:
    #
    # cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom
    # md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 >/var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum
    # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Do you see any errors in your logs (in /var/log)?
Or any errors in the output of
    Code:
    dmesg
    ?

The only errors in the log were:

(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice
    No such device.
(EE) Generic Mouse: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Generic Mouse"

But you have a mouse connected to your computer, don't you?

The mouse is connected, at the time I was more aware of the monitor problem and not the mouse. Now I will look into the mouse error. Could an error on the mouse cause a video problem?

After looking in the log file the line after the (EE) listings there was the following:
    (II) UnloadModule: "mouse"
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Configured Mouse" (type: MOUSE)
    (II) Configured Mouse: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded

Does this mean the ps2 mouse loaded? I do have a ps2 selected and on the machine.
