did a bit of trial & error and came to the point of dpkg-reconfiguring the package

on phpmyadmin installation thru apt-get you will be asked for an automatic configuration. instead of choosing "apache2" with space bar, I did just press enter, so it hasnt been configured right.

since I did this now, loading server1.example.com/phpmyadmin still doesnt work but now it seems like a suphp error (browser wants to download a file)
other working domains wont let me access /phpmyadmin either (browser wants to download a file)

    edit:

    commented following lines in /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/suphp.conf

    AddType application/x-httpd-suphp .php .php3 .php4 .php5 .phtml
    suPHP_AddHandler application/x-httpd-suphp

    now it works =)

does this bring any security issues?
