    Good afternoon.

First of all, I must praise you Falko for your brilliant How To's. I am quite new to Linux OS so please bare with me if I sound a little stupid at times. I have just followed your 'Perfect Server - Ubuntu 11.10' and got through it all virtually error free. The only problem I have is when I try to access Squirrel Mail, I get the error, as mention in the title of this thread, 'ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.', and I am unclear as to what is at fault. I have looked through a few threads on this site, as well as a few others on the internet but I have failed to figure out what is wrong. I would be very grateful if anyone can give me a helping hand and point me in the right direction.

    Update

I have just installed ISPConfig3, which I was going to leave till after I'd set up the site on the server and I am no longer getting the 'ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.', but I'm still having still having trouble logging in through Squirrelmail. I've tried the account that was set up within the tutorial to no avail. I have also tried to set up an account in ISPConfig3 but this does not seem to work either. I would really appreciate it if someone could show me the error of my ways and save my sanity. Thanks in advance.

Are there any errors in your mail log (in the /var/log/ directory)?

What account do you use now to log in? The one you created through ISPConfig?

Sharp being the account I set up during installation and Sharpvonchaos the one I tried to set up via ISPConfig. I also tried sending an email to one of those accounts from my live.co.uk account and the system is showing that the mail is there to read.

Also, at the moment, I am not able to log into Squirrelmail. I have added my site (moodle) to my server and redirected apache to point to /var/www/moodle and am now not able to log into /webmail. Any ideas how to rectify this problem also?

First you should undo your changes in apache. Sites get added trogh ispconfig and ispconfig creates the directories where the site files ahve to be uploaded. So if you site is e.g. named mydomain.tld, then the web directory for your site is /var/www/mydomain.tld/web/ and not /var/www/moodle/

The imap connection does not work because the maildir yould not be created by ispconfig. Check if there are any jobs in the jobqueue in the ispconfig monitor and if there are any errors listed in the system log in the ispconfig monitor. Beside that, did you modify any paths in ispconfig under System > server config ?

Thank you for your reply Till.

I'm still a little confused. Once I've changed the settings back in Apache, how do I go about setting up my site?

I'd like it set up so that I can access my site through my.domain, and access mail through my.domain/mail, if that is possible?

There aren't any jobs in the jobqueue, and there are no errors in the system log.
I also did not edit any settings within the system . server config.

Also, how would I go about setting up mail accounts once all the rest is set up?

Thanks again, it is very much appreciated.

Login to ispconfig, klick on Sites > Add new website, enter "my.domain" in the domain field and click on save. Thats all.

Thats not possible as /mail is a system directory which is reserved by ispconfig, so you can not use it as an alas. But you can use e.g. /webmail as described in the installation tutorial.

    Click on:

Email > Add new domain, then enter the domain name. Then click on Email > Email mailbox > Add new mailbox, enter the email address and password and click on save.

By the way, thats all described in detail in the manual.

    Thank you for that.

So once I've set up the website through ispconfig, all I do is copy my website folder into the folder created by ispconfig?

I am planning on purchasing the manual in the near future, I should really have purchased it before this stage to make my life easier.

Basically yes, but you also might have to create a database or run an installer - that depends on the web application you want to use. Please refer to the application's installation instructions.
