So I know these posts can be quite volatile and realistically its an argument over rpm vs. deb based systems, but I was curious as to what is your preferred OS for running ISPConfig 3 and why? I am running an ubuntu build but am having issues, but it may be my fault. I am thinking of switching to CentOS as some say its better for a production server. What are your thoughts?
I think that the best server operating systems are Debian and CentOS. They are widely used, and they have stable packages that make uptime a priority. When you get outside of those two distributions you can have issues with packages not being tested as thoroughly. For ISPConfig, I think that they test and develop and Debian. That is why I choose it for my servers. To get some newer packages, I use dotdeb. It is a highly reliable source for newer packages that still keep stability.
Thanks! I have never used pure Debian. I think I will go through the Perfect server how-to doc on here and see how it looks for config.
Debian and Ubuntu as we do most of our development on these distributions. Debian is more stable than Ubuntu. I wouldn't use CentOS as you have to mix lot os third-party repos to get all required packages, and this might cause upgrade issues.
So when the guide author says to use Debian, you use debian! I had just started redoing the box with CentOS and will stop and go the Debian route. Thanks for clarifying for me as I hope this makes long-term admining a lot better.
