I started my samba server with a samba.conf taken from a tutorial in this site and everything is working very well, but...
I used [global] settings exactly as in the example and made my "netbios name = debian". Now I regret that and wish I had used a more explicit name.
/ How can I change the "netbios name" ?
I edited samba.conf and changed that to "myownname" , but in the Windows clients the connection still appears as "debian".

    Hmm usually this should work?
Did you restart samba? Does windows maybe cache some data?

Windows has mysterious ways ... (reason why I am moving to Linux).
/ I did restart samba and I did restart the windows client several times, but...
/ The Netbios "Debian" remained stubbornly under "Network" in the windows client.
/ Suddenly, when I started the windows machine this morning, the new name appeared there, as by miracle because I didn't do any new changes after all the previous windows restarts had no effect. May be it was a miracle !

You'll need to reboot your server and clients so far I know.
