I found a few links - I don't know if they help: http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/1997/08/msg00934.html http://www.redhat.com/archives/ataraid-list/2002-September/msg00013.html http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=46665 http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=136749 http://www.uwsg.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0205.1/0432.html http://linuxfromscratch.org/pipermail/lfs-chat/2003-November/018789.html
Um... from my many years of watching drives die... this has all of the characteristics of a failing hard disk (physical errors). I would make a backup immediately... maybe play around with it... see if you can correct it, but by all means please fully expect this drive to completely bork at anytime.
Knowing suse the way i do, dmesg will always show these error messages for CDROM and DVD-ROM devices when there is no media inserted. Is /dev/hdc a cdrom?
