    Hi,

    I am very new to this, so please bear with me...

    I have set up a SAMBA share which seems to work fine when I set Guest OK = Yes. When I change that to NO, I get prompted for a password. This is obviously what I want, but it automatically sets this user as tmpuser, and I have no clue as to what the password is for that! Please can you let me know where I can find\set this user's credentials? Is it in the Global area of the smb.conf? If so, what is the syntax?

    Thanks in advance

    For information, I am using Share Level security

    Hi Falko, thanks for replying. I have followed the How To and added a user to the linux and samba databases. However, still when I connect to the share from an XP machine, it prompts me for a password, but with the username as tmpuser which is greyed out. Any idea how I get it to prompt for the user as well?

    What's in your smb.conf?

    It is literally just the following:

    [global]
    workgroup = davey
    security = share

    [homes]
    path = /home/ftp/homes
    read only = no
    writeable = yes
    guest ok = no
    browseable = no
