    Hello there. I have an ispconfig server used for websites and smtp, but I want to separate the smtp from the web, so i'm currently trying to setup a new smtp server with ispconfig on it.
    From now on, I've had some trouble with amavis, but I'm currently with a good configuration, email sending/receiving working are working fine.
    Next to that, i begun checking if my other services using my old smtp would work with the new one. But unfortunately, it doesnt.

    This is the error :
    Code:
    postfix [EAUTH] Authentication error (535)
    This is the log part from my smtp :
    Code:
    Jul 8 20:48:48 smtp postfix/submission/smtpd[8740]: warning: hostname myreversedns-from-my-isp does not resolve to address my-public-ip: Name or service not known
    Jul  8 20:48:48 smtp postfix/submission/smtpd[8740]: connect from unknown[mypublicip]
    Jul 8 20:48:50 smtp postfix/submission/smtpd[8740]: warning: unknown[mypublicip]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed:
    Jul 8 20:48:56 smtp postfix/submission/smtpd[8740]: warning: unknown[mypublicip]: SASL LOGIN authentication failed: password
    This is working 100% fine with the old smtp server.
    I tried to compare the postfix confs, but I don't see anything relevants, and my tests has been pointless.

    The file does not look right. Do you have a similar working server? If yes, try to use the master.cf form that other server. If not, then please let me know which Linux distribution you use, maybe I have a stock master.cf available here as reference.

    You say that my config is wrong, can you explain what is wrong ?
    I'm on Debian 9

    I do have a working config and I really dont see much differences :

    Those configs are quite different. I compared them side by side with graphical diff tool.
    The latter config used chroot and the first does not, for example.

    I tried with the latter config, but I have still the same issue.

    Assuming you're using chroot, run `lsof /var/spool/postfix/private/auth`, what does that show? (there should be a process for dovecot and multiple 'auth' processes for postfix holding that file open)

    Check your /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf, what are the auth related settings? Should have something like:
    Code:
    ...
    auth_mechanisms = plain login
    disable_plaintext_auth = no
    ...
    service auth {
      unix_listener /var/spool/postfix/private/auth {
        group = postfix
        mode = 0660
        user = postfix
      }
      unix_listener auth-userdb {
        group = vmail
        mode = 0600
        user = vmail
      }
      user = root
    }
    ...

    Can dovecot authenticate your pop3/imap clients? Just to make sure, have you restarted both dovecot and postfix (or reboot the server)?

  12. AEG-Simply

    Oh, I may have misled you sorry... This is not an imap/pop3 failing, roundcube is working fine.
    It's the SMTP authentification that's failing, not a dovecot imap/pop3 problem.

    Basically, both is connected with each other. Postfix (sasl) connects to dovecot via /var/spool/postfix/private/auth (socket I guess) for authentication. But good to know that dovecot imap login works, so we know at least that the dovecot connection to mysql is ok and dovecot itself is working.

    This just means that the login failed.

    But you might want to double check in your email client that the smtp username is really the full email address, some email client tend to remove the domain part of the email address on their own.

    You can debug this further like this:

    Well, I finally reconfigured the entire ispconfig, and re-created the mailbox, and... it's working. No more errors.

    So... Everything seems to be fine. I must had missed something the previous time... because I have still no clue. Still, resolved.
