    Hi there,

I am following the "Installing Ubuntu Studio 7.04 - Linux For The Creative" tutorial located at:

    http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntustudio_7.04

I followed the tutorial word-to-word. There were no errors whatsoever and the installation ran through to disc eject & restart.

However, ubuntu is not listed as one of the options in the 'select OS' screen even though the installer, at the time of installation, detected the presence of XP.

I am completely at loss here. Would appreciate some advise.

    Best,

Are you talking about the select OS screen of windows XP or the grub boot-loader of ubuntu?

    Thx for the response.

The first screen that appears after initial POST screen is where 3 XP installations are mentioned. This is on account of the fact that I've had to fixmbr a couple of times.

Hence, to answer your question, grub boot-loader of ubuntu does not appear.
    :(

If you run fixmbr, you remove the linux boot loader and restore the XP boot loader without linux support. I guess you will have to install linux again and then select that the linux boot-loader shall be installed in the MBR. Then you will be able to select between linux and windows.

I apologise for not being granular enough.

When I mentioned fixmbr and the presence of 3 XP options, please note that all these fixmbrs' were conducted prior to installing linux. Hence, the possibility of removing linux boot loader does not arise.

What settings did you choose for GRUB during Ubuntu installation? Did the installer ask you about GRUB?

I remember the installation detecting the presence of another OS. Most definitely I recollect selecting grub for booting purposes.

Is there anything specific you are looking for in order to troubleshoot?

No. Did you have any choices regarding the boot loader during the installation?

It quite simply confirmed the presence of another OS on the harddrive, namely XP, and suggested that grub manage the booting process. I consented to this option.

Oh well, I suppose a re-installation is unavoidable.

I surely would like to re-use the space on the harddrive where the present ubuntu unfunctioning installation resides. How can I do this? Would simply reinstalling ensure this?

    Wud appreciate a prompt response.

I think the Ubuntu installer lets you choose the current Ubuntu partition for the new installation. :)

I answered your question above. You can tell the Ubuntu installer to re-use the old Ubuntu partition.
