hi there wondered if anyone can help after installing fedora7 with vmware as per the falko how to "which could do with an update by the way falko as some of the links etc are out-dated" ,,please don't stop doing them though you are by far the best help I've ever had..thanks I've met a problem : all seems to be fine right up to the point of acctually booting the virtual machine ,the window goes black then returns to the same summary screen.. log investigation revealed some sort of memory error...? If any one has a clue let me know and i'll post the logs etc, thanks in advance Rayman
Do you mean the vm from this tutorial? http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_server_fedora7 It's booting fine for me...
its the fedora 7 perfect desktop i found the missing links etc and did every thing as per the setup even converted and tranfered the virtual machine but it doesn't start I've tryed debug mode and that through a few errors with the floppy "as there isn't one" so I removed that and I've given the thing more memory but still it fails to start the virtual win xp pro ... which i need for running autocad
So you're referring to a vm that you built yourself and not one you downloaded from HowtoForge? I recommend that you delete the SCSI HDD in the vm and add an IDE HDD instead. There seem to be problems with Fedora 7 and SCSI HDDs in VMware...
creating ide hi falko it is a vm i created my self on a machine identical to the one with fedora same memory hdd dvd ram video card the lot the machines spec are as follows linux box: asrock mobo with 8 channel surround sound & pci.e p4 3.2 ghz hyperthreading enabled 1.5gb ram 160 gb hdd (sata) nvidia 7600gs lg dvd ram nvidia drivers all installed correctly and will run beryl and games etc in 3d everything else is a per the perfect desktop howto windoz box: exactly the same spec all drivers upto date winxp sp1 (I don't like spy's so no sp2 installed) vm creater installed as per this howto :http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_converter_windows_linux created vm machine on second ntfs partion then ported to linux box I try removing the scsi in the edit virtual machine setting and the only way i could find was to create another hard drive on ide hdd it gave it "ide 1:0 " but created another file..? now the vmx file reads as follows : #!/usr/bin/vmware config.version = "8" virtualHW.version = "4" memsize = "1152" MemAllowAutoScaleDown = "FALSE" MemTrimRate = "-1" displayName = "winbox" guestOS = "winxppro" numvcpus = "2" tools.remindInstall = "TRUE" floppy0.present = "FALSE" floppy0.fileName = "A:" sound.present = "TRUE" sound.virtualDev = "sb16" sound.filename = "-1" sound.autodetect = "TRUE" usb.present = "TRUE" ethernet0.present = "TRUE" ethernet0.addressType = "generated" ethernet0.connectionType = "bridged" scsi0:0.present = "FALSE" scsi0:0.fileName = "winbox.vmdk" ide0:0.present = "TRUE" ide0:0.autodetect = "TRUE" ide0:0.filename = "auto detect" ide0:0.deviceType = "atapi-cdrom" ide0:1.present = "TRUE" ide0:1.autodetect = "TRUE" ide0:1.filename = "auto detect" ide0:1.deviceType = "atapi-cdrom" scsi0.present = "TRUE" scsi0.virtualDev = "buslogic" buslogic.noDriver = "FALSE" sound.device = "-1" debug = "TRUE" priority.grabbed = "normal" priority.ungrabbed = "normal" ide1:0.present = "TRUE" ide1:0.fileName = "winbox-0.vmdk" ide1:0.redo = "" ethernet0.generatedAddress = "00:0c:29:08:79:38" uuid.location = "56 4d e9 36 3b 5b 05 6b-c1 2d a4 04 a9 08 79 38" uuid.bios = "56 4d e9 36 3b 5b 05 6b-c1 2d a4 04 a9 08 79 38" ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0" sound.startConnected = "FALSE" as you can see it says the scsi isn't there then it says it is i was going to delete the: scsi0.present = "TRUE" . scsi0.virtualDev = "buslogic" and give that a try but if you have other ideas they are welcome
scsi - ide hdd ok I tryed a few things even renaming files and editing them by hand closest i got to bootup was file was created with scsi geometry and can't be used as ide so take it it needs to be created as ide when importing machine in creater but i can't find an option to do this I'm at a lose and awaite you thoughts
In VMware, before you power on a vm, there's an option called "Edit virtual machine settings". There you can remove the SCSI HDD and add an IDE HDD.
scsi to ide Itryed that falko but if you want to use your existing disc file it just changes it back to scsi and if you create a new file it doesn't read the data from the existing file.. i think I'll just create a blank virtual machine and reinstall windoz fresh on to that as that way i can create an ide drive and that way it works and just reinstall everything i need but thanks anyway it might just be the virtual machine i imported just doesn't like vmware conversion..? cheers for your help Ray
So you tried to convert a physical Windows system to a vm? Did you take a look at this tutorial? http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_converter_windows_linux
