Current setup 1xDebian etch server with webmin access 1xCentOS5.3 server with ISPConfig3 and webmin access 1xRouter with NAT and PORT forwarding and DMZ(not used currently) 1xStatic IP Several Domain names. I wish to setup both servers as nameservers ns1 and ns2 and register them with one of the domain names I have, I then wish to host a few websites, ie different domains on 1 of these 2 servers What is the best way(or a good way) to do this setup and how do you do it? and is it possible with 1 static IP or do I need to get another static IP for the 2 nameservers to work?
That kind of defeats the reason why you need more than one name server which is for fault tolerance, your other name servers need to be on a different network and different geographical location. Well if you get a second IP address you can still do the setup. But you cannot do it with one IP address.
So if I was to get a second internet service connection from a different ISP with a different static IP address in a different class presumably, would that be better than just getting a second IP address with the same host?
are you experienced with their dns services as to the reliablility? just worried about free services I have hsphere reseller hosting in the us which gives me nameservers for every domain I set up, but I find the reliability of these nameservers to be poor, and subdomains that point here from those nameservers are regularly having intermittent host not found probs with their nameserver services. Running tests showed their services going on and off line for a few minutes to 15 minutes at a time several times a day. I want full control now but I dont believe its time to move to dedicated servers in data centres yet due to the cost, and what I am doing does not really warrant that yet.
I used them sometime ago and never had any problem as they give you several slaves you can use. You can do it your self but you will have to have two connections from different providers (up all the time) for it to be reliable.
