Amavis is taking up too much Disk I/O. I set $max_servers = 1 in amavisd config; no change. PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 21020 amavis 20 0 568176 339520 232 R 85.0 68.0 0:11.24 clamd This doesn't show the I/O, and is the highest I've seen CPU and MEM lately, but I wanted to show it's clamd running on user amavis. Thanks!
You can try to put the temporary directory where amavis puts the email attachment for scanning by clamd onto a ramdisk if you have a lot of mail traffic.
Ok thanks if it spikes back up I'll give that a go. I've increased CPUs and switched to SSDs as well and that seems to be helping so far too.
You can also use monit to monitor amavis and take certain necessary actions automatically if it spikes again.
