is there a difference between these package managers. I see that in some of the HOWTOS people have alternated between the two. Are they different? They both seem to do the same job.
aptitude is the newer package manager and shall be better when it comes to conflicts in package depenedencys. As far as I know, one should use aptitude. But personally I use apt as it works fine for me. And the command is shorter
On Ubuntu 10.10 (the desktop version), aptitude isn't installed by default anymore (whereas it is on Ubuntu server). Maybe the Ubuntu guys tend to use apt-get. I've never had any problems using both, so if you ask me, it doesn't matter which one you use.
