Hey, Im about to have a server up and running and initially I didnt want to have a desktop install at all. However, i need to use dc++ and unfortunately there arent any good text-based/command line only alternatives. So, the only reason i want a desktop install is because of linuxdc++. I dont need anything else, no unnecessary programs whatsoever. I heard Xfce is pretty lightweight? Would that do? Or do you guys have any other options? I have just installed a standard debian system (only command line) with the official netinst images for the stable release found here: http://www.debian.com/CD/netinst/index.en.html How do i proceed? How it went... Thx for the replies! Debian actually did have a xfce iso for download. I tried that, but as usual, programs like gimp, openoffice, etc are always included. I don't need these, i want it very simple, and since my linux knowledge at the moment is limited and I'm under time pressure I had to abandon my project and use a regular windows installation and then use vmware to run a tiny command line debian install. The issue for someone with me with limited linux knowlegde is how to modify your install the way you want it, how to remove packages and at the same time consider dependencies etc. I feel that you have to be really really stuborn to use linux, you almost always hit a bump. However, I have to show my gratitude towards falko, I really like your howtos! keep up the good work! /magic
In debian you don't ahve to worry about dependencies. Apt-get, apitude, synaptic etc. will do that for you. You just select what you want to install/remove.
apt-get i heard doesnt remove dependent packages when used to remove, it just removes the package in the list, så in order to remove the all packages, including dependent packages you have to manually list them all, correct me if I am wrong. I tried aptitude, maybe if i spent more time learning it, it might work, i just felt that it was very user unfriendly. I also used synaptic in the gui, and that was pretty nice, however for some reason only the icons were removed in the menu over installed programs, the name of the deleted programs were still there. Anyway, i just got tired, in windows i enter the controlpanel, choose whatever program i want to remove, and then click remove, its simple and it always works! no bumps, no headaches! With tools such as nlite i can now customized my xp installation as i wish, just like you can choose whatever packages you like in linux. Right now im running a win xp pro sp2 installation and it runs smooth! The best of all, i dont have any headaches! It consumes approx 80 MB of RAM! its stable, and it just works! Even though i would love a command line based linux install as i believe they are great, but i dont really see any reason to move to linux right now to run a gui.
