I'm a newbie and was wondering about how is the correct way to install GRUB with Windows XP on the first partition? I've read that the wrong way is to let it install in the MBR, but, never did I find mention of how to do it correctly, or other options.
    Just don't quite understand.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

My intention is, to actually install a triple boot system. I'll use Win 2000 for my 7 year old grandson to use, XP on the second partition, and Ubuntu 8.04 on the third partition. Is there any way I can download the newest ISO(when released) burn it, and use it in the normal manner and get the correct configuration? Or would I be better off using something like boot magic?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi simska,

first install the both windows versions - afterwards you can install Ubuntu. During the Ubuntu installation the grub boot loader will be installed automatically. Everytime when you boot your system you can choose which system shall be started. When a new Ubuntu release is available you can install it without worries.

    Best regards,

    Olli

I did a test installation of XP and Ubuntu 7.04 on a 20GB drive to see how the install was going to go.
I ended up with 4 entries in my boot menu:
Ubuntu hardy (developement branch), kernel 2.6-24-12 generic
Ubuntu hardy (developement branch), kernel 2.6-24-12 generic (recovery)
    Ubuntu hardy (developement branch), memtest86+
    Other operating systems:
    Microsoft Windows XP Professional

I'm not sure why I ended up with the additional entries in the boot menu. Is this in error, and if not, is there something that can be done to clean up this menu?
    Thanks for your help.

    This is normal.
If you want to change it, you'd have to modify /boot/grub/menu.lst. But I advise against it.
