I have a new 20" 2.66GHz iMac with 4 GB of RAM. I have downloaded Ubunto 8.10 and burnt the CD. Can I boot from the CD?

I have only one or two Windows programs I want to run, specifically IL2 1946 and Sony Vegas 6.0d. I know from other forums the IL2 will run on Linux with WINE.

I have all the Windows software installed on the external drive I used as a back-up on the PC. The IL2 will open on a PC from this external drive, no problem. So, if I could get it to run under Linux by booting from the CD, I would have a "perfect" solution.

I suspect that installing WINE on the CD after the fact might be a problem, but I could do the entire thing again on a USB drive no problem.

    Thanks or any ideas.

if you downloaded Ubuntu Desktop you can boot it from CD. However it will (a) be slow and (b) changes won't be permanentaly saved.

If you really want to tryout ubuntu I rather suggest to do a real install. Before you do that, run the Desktop (Live) CD to check how well your ahrdware is supported.
