    Hi folks,

    Hardware
    AMD Athlon64 x2 3000 AM2
    RAM - 2G dual channel 6400

    VMWare server 1.0.4
    Host OS - Ubuntu 7.04 server amd64

    Can I install CentOS amd64 as guest OS on VMWare? Are there any foreseeable problem?

    TIA

    I have run CentOS 5 under VMware, but the host OS was Win2k3. The install seemed to take forever, but once it was installed everything was fine.

    Hi folks,

    Tks for your advice.

    Re manual/guide for installing CentOS 5 as guest OS on VMware 1.0.4, I don't have it. I have manual for installing Window 2003 server and OpenSuse as guest OS on VMWare.

    Google search did not find it. Is there manual on direct installation via BT or CD/DVD? TIA

    You can install CentOS like any other distribution under VMware. Why do you need a guide for it?

    This is my 1st experiment building a virtual machine. I'm following this guide;
    How to create a virtual machine with VMware on Linux:
    http://searchservervirtualization.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid94_gci1245061,00.html

    It runs Window 2003 server as an example.

    Now I have "VMware Server Console" running.
    $ /usr/bin/vmware-server-console
    starts the "VMware Server Console" window ready for installing guest OS.

    Also I have "CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64.zip" download and extracted on
    Code:
    /home/satimis/CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64/
    CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64-s001.vmdk
    CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64-s002.vmdk
    CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64-s003.vmdk
    CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64-s004.vmdk
    CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64-s005.vmdk
    CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64.vmdk
    CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64.vmsd
    CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64.vmx
    nvram
    readme

    I have no idea how to proceed. Neither their "readme" file provides instruction. Is /home/satimis/CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64/ an ideal path for its installation.

    OR
    I have to move it to;
    /usr/local/src/CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64/
    ???

    Advice would be appreciated. TIA

    All of the VMDK files are VMWare disk images, so you can attach those to the VMWare session and boot from them and or use them in VMWare, etc... What does the readme say? I have always just downloaded the ISO for the guest os I want to install, tell VMWare to boot from that ISO and instlal it just like it was a regular install.

    Thanks for your advice. Please advise in more detail with example, if possible.

    I can start

    satimis@ubuntu:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/httpd.vmware start
    Code:
    Password:
    Starting httpd.vmware:
    satimis@ubuntu:~$ /usr/bin/vmware-server-console
    Code:
    /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console: /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib32/libcairo.so.2)

    start VMWare-Server-Console window as user.

    To install guest OS can I work as user OR must be root;
    $ sudo /usr/bin/vmware-server-console
    ???

    $ cat /home/satimis/CentOS-5_lamp.x86_64/readme
    Code:
    "LAMP" CentOS-5 x86_64 installation

    root password: centos
    remote acces with ssh enable

    updated on 'Tue Oct 2 14:44:12 CEST 2007'

    100Hz kernel added and being default, see

    I VMware, there's an option to import existing vms (I think it's under File > Import). Please try that.

    What are the function of these 2 kernels

    Cent 2.6.18 ........el5

    ???

    IIRC I came across a Howtoforge tutorial re setup LAMP on CentOS 5 before. Any advice? TIA

    Edit:

    Finally I found following documents

    1)
    The Perfect Setup - CentOS 5.0 (32-bit)
    http://howtoforge.org/perfect_setup_centos5.0

    I'm running 64bit CentOS 5. I do hope that the document also works on 64bit.

    2)
    Installing Lighttpd With PHP5 And MySQL Support On CentOS 5.0
    http://howtoforge.org/taxonomy/term/57

    I think 1) above will be more suitable for me. Advice would be appreciated. TIA
