I'm not aware of any AMD86 package...I know there is x86, and amd64. It's called amd64 because it's a 64bit package, which AMD came up with first, then Intel used as well. All processors bar a few made today are 64bit. That AMD64 package can be used with any computer with a 64bit processor, Intel, AMD, Solaris, or any other. Your Intel 3220 is a 64bit processor, so get the amd64 package. You can also use x86 if you wish, but you won't be able to recognise more than 3.5GB or so of RAM in the machine.
Sorry, My question should be: Can Unbuntu 8.04 Server amd64 be installed on Intel X86-64? Thanks for your replay, heymrdj. I make sense.
Just finished installation a few minutes ago mostly based on Falko Timme's tutorial "The Perfect Server - Ubuntu Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server)". Falko said in the tutorial that "this tutorial is written for the 32-bit version of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, but should apply to the 64-bit version with very little modifications as well." If the author tell what is the little modifications, it will be very helpful for 64-bit users. Any way, the tutorial is very helpful for me, thanks Falko very much!
