I changed my hostname from xxx.506birch.com to yyy.506birch.com and now can't connect to the database when I try to log-onto ISPconfig.

Any ideas how I fix this?

Try to use the IP. (eg. https://yourIP:81)
Then set the right address in the settings. Don't have any access here so I can't check if that could be the problem.

Does yyy.506birch.com point to the correct IP address?

I guess I don't truly understand what the xxx portion of xxx.506birch.com does?

It seems like a dumb question, but I just re-built my server following The Perfect Setup - Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (Ubuntu 7.04) to the letter, including calling my server server1.506birch.com and when the setup was finishing it wanted "server1" as hostname not www. Where did I go wrong?

You can use any hostanme, as long as the hostname exists in DNS or in the /etc/hosts file and points to the IP address of your server.
