Changing the address of an existing mailbox in ISPConfig

    Hello,

It may happen that an email address needs to evolve: correction, renaming, change of service, etc.
In such cases, preserving the message history and folder structure is obviously desirable, without having to split content across multiple mailboxes.

    Observation
In ISPConfig, each mailbox has an internal identifier. This can be seen in the link
    /mail/webmailer.php?id=…
associated with the Webmail button for each mailbox in the menu Email → Email Mailbox → Mailbox → Email.
This identifier appears to be incremented according to the order in which mailboxes are created.

    Question
Is it possible to modify the address of an existing mailbox in ISPConfig?

    If not:
—is this due to a genuine technical constraint (Postfix/Dovecot/SQL schema)? If so, which one?
—or is it a design choice on the ISPConfig side (interface or data model)?

    Thank you for your clarification.

Place the cursor into the email address input field, use your keyboard to type in the desired letters or numbers, and press the save button.
You could have tried it yourself instead of wasting our free community support resources.

And what you posted as an observation is not even related to the question if a mailbox address can be changed.

    Thank you for the clarification.
My test showed that this was possible, but the documentation does not mention it.
My question therefore concerned the scope of official support and any potential side effects related to changing a mailbox address.
I therefore take note that the address can be modified directly from the interface.

If you change it and do not receive an error message indicating that you cannot change it, and it works, then this should be sufficient confirmation.

I see no reason why the documentation should explicitly mention it. If you cannot change a setting, then this field is locked (greyed out), and you cannot change it. Or you get an error message that tells you it can not be changed in case you attempt it.

    Hello, Till,
Thank you again for the clarification.
A colleague using another server management interface thought that renaming a mailbox was not possible, so I wanted to confirm this behaviour.
I forwarded your answer to him, and we proceeded with the installation.
