I am getting ready to refresh my colo box I run ISPConfig on to host friends and family email. I only have a single server so when I am doing work, etc I have no backup dns or smtp servers. I was thinking of trying to setup a cluster this time with dns and mail running on a micro EC2 instance. Has anyone ever setup their configuration this way? Thanks
That can surely be done, though I would not recommend a AWS instance for this. My personal preference for such secondary services is Hetzner: https://hetzner.com.
I am US based but I suspect some like Hetzner would be easier than AWS. The reason I was thinking AWS as it would give me more experience in working with AWS and that would be a good thing for me at work, even though I run ISPConfig for personal use. Thanks for the information!
unless you already have an AWS account, and have the port 25 restriction removed, you won't be able to send out mail from the instance you create there... ( at least not without configuring postfix to send out mail via AWS SES... and the config/dns work required for that would be just as much work for you as refreshing your colo box) you now need to provide AWS with a compelling reason to unblock port 25, and have at least 3 months of usage / payment history with them before they would even consider opening port 25 now... and they will still try to push you towards SES first.
