Hi all, my name is Kyle, and I'm new on the forums, but have been on HowtoForge for quite a while. I have used linux for about 4 months, using ubuntu, but I have always used just the desktop edition. I am looking to start a home server in my basement. I have an old computer with a 100gb hard drive, and 2gb of ram. I have a direct connection my router, and have comcast internet. Here's the thing. I'm wondering what's required. When I tried to follow the tutorials on HowtoForge, it said I needed DNS settings, and tons of other stuff that I didn't have. I'm wondering what I need, how to get it, where to get it, and how much it costs. Free would be preferred, but shelling out a little bit of money wouldn't be to much of a problem. Could anyone kindly tell me what I need?

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help!

Which tutorial exactly are you trying to use?

I have used many tutorials on HowtoForge, but I always get stuck on the part where it asks for the server ip and dns settings. I don't know where to get those settings.

So your server is in your LAN? In that case you can use a free IP of your subnet. The gateway is your router's local IP (not the public one), and regarding the DNS servers, you can use the ones from your ISP or even the ones from the tutorial (e.g. 145.253.2.75).
