Most of my experience has been with windows desktops. Two years ago, I made the jump to MAC and never plan on going back. I also have a desktop that is running Mandrake. Recently I bought a server with dual Xeon processors and plan on installing Fedora 9. I have read the How to Forge article on setting up and configuring the os however, my question relates more to the domain name and the domain name server information required. I have a domain name registered through Register.com and they have provided me with the IP and DNS information on where this domain is currently parked. I also have a static IP and DNS information provided by my ISP. What information do I need to use to have my domain and and all relative sites hosted via my own server? AJ
Do you mean you want to run your own name server, or do you just want the domain and some subdomains to be pointing to the server?
Yes. I am trying to setup the "Perfect Server - Fedora 9" as outlined in your "How to Forge" article which included the following for ISP's and Hoster's: Apache web server (SSL-capable) with PHP5 and Ruby, Postfix mail server with SMTP-AUTH and TLS, BIND DNS server, Proftpd FTP server, MySQL server, Dovecot POP3/IMAP, Quota, Firewall, etc." My confusion is during the initial ISO install, it asks for the following information: Server name: server1.example.com IP: ?? Default Gateway: ?? Subnet mask ?? DNS 1 ?? DNS 2 ?? I want to make sure I configure this correctly and I am not sure where this information comes from. Is this the information provided by my ISP or are these parameters that I need to develop myself? Thanks for any help or direction you can provide. AJ
Is the server behind a router? Then the router's internal IP is the gateway. If you look at the router settings, you should also see the subnet mask. Regarding the IP, you can use any free IP from your LAN. You can take the DNS servers of your ISP (or use the ones from the tutorial).
