I've used VLC on a Linux box to send live audio and video from a webcam to a DSS server. Also used WinAmp and the OddSock plugin to send just audio from a Windows machine to the DSS server. First check and see if the sample files work properly. Then work on streaming.

Yes, VLC can be run without an X interface. If the sample movies won't play (VLC in X should be able to play the mp4 versions, not the mov versions) then I'd get on the support listserv for the DSS. They are very helpful.
Now I installed VLC. Need also VLS? How can I run the VLC server and How can I access from my window vlc client? Thanks
