Debian 6 Won't Boot?

    Hi,

After much convincing by many using ISPConfig 3, I decided to switch to Debian 6 using Falko's tutorial here: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-debian-squeeze-with-bind-and-dovecot-ispconfig-3

I already purchased this version online from a vendor that has been solid in the past. The version ISO files from the link above gives a 404 (much updates on links at HowToForge need updating).

For some reason, I simply cannot get Debian to boot from the DVD. The Bios is set how it has always been for successful Linux installs. I have tried on two motherboards, both of which have seen at least a combined 100 successful Linux installs.

Is there anything special that needs to be set in the bios for Debian 6? Thanks for the help.

    Hi Falko,

Thanks for the response. Actually I tried this today. Fortunately there was quite a selection. It just seems that no one wants to make a bootable iso file there. Unless I am losing my mind (which is fairly standard), I probably burned up 15 bucks worth of DVDs for different 64 bit Debian 6. None would boot. Tried the USB 64 bit boot file there too....no go. Making sure I wasn't having machine or bios problems, I popped in the old Fedora 14 which booted right up. Who knows?

    Thanks

    Hi Falko,

Thanks for the link. I wish I could say this one worked. I viewed the contents and saw the boot image...still no go. Must be doing something wrong. The disk burn is too small on the DVD and taking only ten minutes with the slowest burn speed, while at the same time the expected burn time at this speed states around 2 1/2 hours (which seems more appropriate). Gotta be user error. Can't seem to get a simple disk burned!

This is a netboot image, it has only a size of < 200 MB and fits on a normal CD rom. So it will not take longer then a few minutes to burn it to cd.

So quick question. Should I put this only on a CD versus a DVD? Three slow burned DVDs did not boot.

I use always a CD, dont know if the image works for a dvd as well.

Ok, this may be the issue. That's what I'll do. Thank you, Till

    Well,

I gave it a whirl with a CD versus the DVD...still no go. Thanks anyway

Make sure you burn it as an image, not as a data CD.

    Hi Falko,

I meant to pass that on earlier as well. I keep getting the error that the file is not valid. Example (using Windows 7). Right click on the image file prompts to specifically burn as image...then the error. Also, these are all .img not .iso files. Maybe the problem? Thank you

If you use the link I posted, you should get an .iso, not an .img.

    Hey Falko,

That is certainly what I would think too, especially the fact that the link even ends with the .iso extension. I combed through this entire file and found no .iso at all. Only .img?

    Thanks anyway

How do you mean that? You just download the .iso file and burn it to an CD as an image - nothing else has to be done.

In order for Windows 7 to burn this as an .iso, it must be able to identify it as such first, else it sees the file as just that, a file. That is the case with this download. Windows does not view this download as an .iso, only a file. I've burned it multiple times, multiple ways, and none are viewed as an iso.
