drowning in spam

    Hello,

please help me, someone ?!
I'm desperate, because every now and then my Webserver (Suse 10.1 / Ispconfig) is brought to its knees by the loads of spam. The average load goes up to a max of about 130 (!) and this is because of dozens of perl processes trying to kill the spam.
What can I do about it? I have already done the clamd 'patch', but it does not seem to work well enough.
I cannot find a proper solution in the forum, or maybe it's because the hints are widespread. Perhaps someone could help me please? And maybe it would be a good idea to put the different hints into this one thread?

    thank you,
    regards, Tom

How much spam does the server receive per day? What hardware do you use (CPU, memory)?

Well, I don't know how to figure that out, because the spam gets deleted immediately on most accounts. Could you give me a hint?

The Server is an Athlon 64 3700+ with 1GB RAM (DDR400) . I was thinking about putting a bit more RAM into it, but this cannot be the solution.

    Thank you,
    regards, Tom
