So general question for best practices setting up a multi server setup. The HowTo's has always showed internal IP addresses when setting up servers. I have both internal and external IP addresses on my servers. The question is. Should the servs communicate over the external IP addresses or is it better to use internal? Running into problems with FQDN and ssl certificates if I use internal hostnames. So just general question for the members. Thanks.
Both will work, you have just to ensure to use one approach consistently and that the /etc/hosts files on all servers match your decision and use either the internal or the external IP addresses for all hosts. Personally I would use the internal IP addresses.
