I am having some strange problems with my FTP client timing out on certain files. I am using Ubuntu Edgy. With ISPConfig. I have tried the following FTP Clients: Firefox FireFTP gFTP FileZilla Kasablanca All of them have the same problem. Certain files simply time out. However, when I transfer these to a Windows machine and then FTP them it works fine. What would cause certain files to time out? I've noticed this mostly with FTPing some images however a couple of php documents did not want to upload as well.
I had the timeout-problems too - and not only with FTP (Samba and NFS too). And I discovered that THIS is a problem of the switch. (Try your connection with a HUB and you will see that you dont have any timeout ). Low-Cost switches doesnt have a "fallback" - they connect with 100Mbit if the length of the connection supports or not. Windows is in this direction less sensible than Linux and so (if you are on a cable longer than 12-13 meters) Windows continue working while problems with Linux are starting. Set the speed of your netcard manually to 10Mbit/sec (commandline as user root: mii-tool --force=10BaseT-HD and try your FTP with Linux. If you use high-quality-switches like Netgear, you will never run into this problems.
OK after some more testing it does not seem to be the problem. Here is another newly discovered symptom. Certain folders when trying to open will time out. This only happens on a few folders. Most open and work fine but a particular folder will cuase the system to time out. The same exact happens with certain files. This only happens with specific files. I am not use what it is about the files.
