FTP & ISPconfig: no luck

    Setup
OS: Debian 4.0 ("The Perfect Setup" (plus Desktop environment))

I use ISPConfig and I've got two sites up and running for testing, so partly the setup works.

For both sites I've got all options from Shell Access to Mailuser Login put ON, except for PHP Safe Mode and WAP, so FTP Access should work.

It doesn't. When I'm logged in as admin or as a client trying Web-FTP, I get a message saying: The following error occurred: Could not connect as user admin/client1.

I've got vsftpd working the way it should on FC6 so I know how it's supposed to work, but when I want to connect to either one of the two running pages on my Debian/ISPConfig combination either from my external FTP app or within the internal ISPConfig browser window, an error is all I get.

    My questions:

    1. How to figure out what's wrong and correct it?
    2. Where can I find more precise instructions about ISPConfig & FTP than the ISPConfig Documentation provides?

    Thanx in advance.

    FTP & ISPconfig: got lucky

This is me, answering my own question, but I've still got my second one.

I added a new user to one of my two sites. With this new user, web1_user1, my FTP problem was solved.

Remaining question: what part of any tutorial or instruction did I miss as a result of which I - probably unnecessarily - started puzzling?

An answer will be greatly appreciated.

Clients and the ISPConfig admin users can never login by FTP or SSH, as they are virtual users in ISPConfig and not system users.

Where could I have found that info

Thanks for that reply. Two things:

    1. If admin and clients are virtual users, and only the users we add ourselves are 'real', wouldn't it be a good idea for ISPConfig to automatically generate a 'real' user in order to make something like FTP more simple right away?

    2. Did I miss out on any instructions you provide where I could have found this info about virtual and 'real' users?
