I would like to retask an old box as a Ubuntu server (planning to follow "The Perfect Server - Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon" HOWTO). I want to install two 1TB drives and configure with RAID1 to provide redundancy on the storage (I've been burned before). The server will be for home use by my three-user family, mostly for storage.

The box that I am planning to retask is an HP Pavillion 7940 with 512MB RAM (maxed) and a 1Ghz processor.

My question is whether this hardware will be able to support the RAID and have reasonable access rates.

    I appreciate your help.

    Thanks

    Pete

If it is only for storage why you do not use FreeNAS ?
It will be ok with your hardware.

Also check if the bios of the motherboard support 1Tb HD.

I don't know this computer, but generally if Ubuntu runs on it, you can run software RAID on it. :)
