Hi: Thank you for your reply Till. I am having some real hassles with my new system that I am unable to resolve at the moment. Firstly, I have given up on trying to run name servers on my ISPconfig 3 server - I don't seem able to get it figured out. Secondly, I have an existing ISPConfig 2 box running name servers and they are happy and work. Thirdly, I created a domain using the name servers on my ISPConfig 2 box and that worked fine. Then I pointed the A-record for the domain to my ISPConfig 3 server. I created a site on the ISPConfig 3 box with no DNS entries - I just went to the site menu and added it. This does not work - so now I am a bit stuck. Please could somebody help as this very wearing!! Thank you so much. Kind regards, Mentor
Hi: I have found the error with pointing to websites from an external NS. When I created the site, I set it up with a wildcard (*) for the IP address. I guess that because the NS is pointing to a specific IP that that was causing a problem, because I reset the site IP to the corresponding machine IP and now it is working!! Now what I want to do is be able to setup the NS on the webserver so that our lives are simplified at setup time - I also need to understand how to enable our name server (once created) to update other name servers. Any advise welcome. Thank you. Kind regards, Mentor

Hi Falko: Thank you for your reply to my query. I have actually been looking at your documents very closely, and I still haven't got it right - I am using ISPConfig 3 - trying to at any rate. I have created to NS records and associated them with the host at the registrar that I am using and then in the server config section of ISPConfig 3 I have added the two name servers that I created. Wonderful. However, when I do a dig on the host itself, I can see that DNS is not running, although the service is running because I get no response: [root@apollo13 etc]# dig @localhost domainname.tld ; <<>> DiG 9.5.1-P1 <<>> @localhost domainname.tld ; (1 server found) ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: REFUSED, id: 33385 ;; flags: qr rd; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; WARNING: recursion requested but not available ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;domainname.tld. IN A ;; Query time: 1 msec ;; SERVER: 41.222.52.178#53(41.222.52.178) ;; WHEN: Fri Feb 27 16:21:50 2009 ;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 41 So clearly the DNS service is not configured correctly I think. It is running as a service, and port 53 is open. Please help if you can - I am about to expire!! Kind regards, Mentor PS: We are also having huge issues with path routing - in other words all the sites are given the same base folder from time to time or something like that - it is completely weird.
Hi: Further to the above, I have been looking at this issue and my observations are that MyDNS is working - it is creating records and all that sort of thing - I checked using mydnsexport and it showed the files clearly, however when I run a DNS lookup query against localhost (for starters) using either nslookup or dig, the response fails - so clearly the request is being blocked or it is breaking somewhere along the line: Response to nslookup: [root@apollo13 ~][root@apollo13 ~]# dig @localhost testflight.co.za ; <<>> DiG 9.5.1-P1 <<>> @localhost testflight.co.za ; (1 server found) ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 46336 ;; flags: qr aa rd; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; WARNING: recursion requested but not available ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;testflight.co.za.
