I am running the Debian perfect server and was wondering if there are any suggestions or howto's on how to install/run a video steaming server.

I have never done this before and I think there may be some compatibility issues with flowplayer. Falko recommended a php based server on a thread.

VLC installed with apt-get w/o issue not sure how to test or what ports need to be opened. Somebody used icecast not sure what is the best way to go.

We used red5 streaming server once, which worked well, provided that you have enough RAM and bandwidth available.

Fully open source written in java, supports continuous streaming of video playlists. Development is a bit slow-paced though.

For ubuntu (and debian?): apt-get install red5-server
