How to add space to linux when upgrading a vps's storage???

I am using a debian linux vps with ispconfig installed to manage accounts.

If i upgrade my vps and add more storage space,

can i automatically add that space to the linux system
without installing a fresh system?

how would i do this?

(using linode right now)

Thanks for the link Falko...

As long as my VPS uses LVM i can increase my partition sizes.

Once i upgrade my account (storage space),
i must then shut my server down, increase my file system size,
then restart my server.
