I've got, I suppose, a philosophical question. Given that I want to keep my web server and mail server as two of more separate machines, what would be the best place to start? Each (mail/web)..."Perfect Server with Ubuntu 7.10" or "Perfect Server-pg3/Virtual Users And Domains With Postfix, Courier And MySQL (Ubuntu 7.10)". I am also just kicking the tires on ISPConfig. Seems like an awesome tool. OR!! Do I need to be overly concerned with keeping them separate? I have no plans on becoming big. Not going to fight with the big boys. Just want, as a benny for my various customers, to provide some local hosting services. And I have 6 or seven boxes itching to do something. Just looking for some insight based on your experience with the tutorials and working with web and mail servers. Thanks guys! Tony D.
The reason you keep things separate is either system load, security against hacks, or manageability, but usually those are based on how much traffic you plan on running. You may find it easier to understand the configuration if you had one box that ran Web/DNS and another box that ran a mailserver, that might be nice compromise. You can spread things out from there.
