index.html won't change

I've changed the contents of the original index.html file of my new site and even tried deleting it and making a new one but whenever i visit my site it just shows the original file even though it doesn't exist anymore

 

Clear your browser cache.

 

I've tried that and it still doesn't work, even on multiple computers and an ipod

 

Heres some things to consider:
1) you purchased a domain and forwared it to your IP
2) your changing the index.html in the folder of your website but what about the default index.html in the apache (there is a defaulted index.html that points point from your IP address)

3) you visited the website in my comment recently....(this has nothing to do with the first 2)

4) (also nothing to do wit the first 2)

 

I'm positive that it's index.html not .htm as I originally just changed the contents of the file without touching the name an it still didn't work. The index.html file in the /var/www/ folder is also not the one showing up

 

Have you tried restarting the web server.

I know that Cherokee would continue to server up cached pages for quite some time but a restart sorted it out.

Failing that, if you're using Firefox, install a plugin called Firebug which will allow you to examine whats happening between the browser and the server.

 

What page do you see? Is it the default Apache page or does it say
"This is the default index page of your website." ?

 

It's the ispconfig 3 Default index.html page that says something to the effect of "your new webpage is ready for content to be added. You can remove this index.html page and replace it with your own"

 

Can you go to your web site's document root and post the output of

Can you delete index.html and upload your own index file?

 

i've tried that multiple times

 

I suspect you've set up more than one website on the server and you're seeing the first site. Try editing the index.html for the first site and seeing if that shows in your browser.

If that happens then we can guide you through making sure the correct site shows.

 

The only other website on there is in the default apache directory (/var/www) and that's also not the page that's showing up

 

How did you try to delete the file? Through FTP, or on the shell? Since index.html is owned by root, you must log in as root on the shell and delete the file:

i did just that and it didn't work

 

If it didn't work, what error message did it give?

 

You couldn't delete the file as root on the shell?

 

No I did delete the file and then I uploaded the new one but from a webbrowser it still displays the old one
