Install failure -- Apache 1.3 missing?

This has been one of the more frustrating experiences I've had in recent memory...

My setup starts with a new system, custom built for this purpose, and a clean install following the "Perfect Server" Ubuntu How-To for Intrepid Ibex (8.10).

I didn't skip any of the steps in that how-to, and it appeared to complete without errors. I then proceeded to attempt to install ISPConfig following the instructions on the website. I don't understand most of the display output, but it looks like the install (a standard install, not an expert one) was looking for apache 1.3, not apache 2.2, which is what is actually installed, and failed completely thereafter.

Actually, I didn't skip that step either, but I will try it again, on my next reload (after I get some sleep), although I didn't understand much of what I was doing, and it is possible that I may have mis-typed or mis-spelled something due to bleary eyes and/or font confusion. I will try to see if I can copy and paste into putty, just to avoid such mishaps next time, since I've now gone through this load 8 times with Ubuntu 8.10, 2 with Mandriva 2009, 1 with Ubuntu 8.04, 1 with Debian 4.0r6, and am considering downloading the Fedora Core 10 DVD image as my next hope, if the current download of Centos doesn't work first.

If it is a font confusion issue, that would explain why it is so repeatable (for me), and why there isn't an entire forum of folks screaming in pain from these attempts. I gotta get some sleep. Thanks for the reply and at least a glimmer of hope that I may actually be able to do this

 

How do I verify the shell? I copied and pasted the Step 9 command line into a puTTY session, but I don't have any idea how to verify that it did anything?

How do I tell what shell I am running? "which bash" gives output of /bin/bash, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I am running that shell, or that it will be the shell that ISPConfig will have available when I get there?

SUCCESS!!! - Well, almost?

I have managed to get the ISPConfig software installed, and logged into it, and it is a truly beautiful sight to see!

There is something in the How-To's that I am mistaking for another character, and I don't know which, but when I copy and paste all of the How-To commands into a text editor (Windows Notepad), and edit anything that is required to be specific to my hostname, etc., I was able to create a successful installation by pasting those lines into puTTY.

I got zero errors during the installation process, although Step 9 doesn't give much feedback, positive or not on successful completion...

Unfortunately, this was all done in a test environment, and now that I have a working installation, I need to figure out how to change the IP address to the real IP address...

Is this possible to change a Server IP address without having to completely uninstall/re-install ISPConfig? I know how to change the IP address for the server without ISPConfig, but are there any special considerations I will need to be able to bring it up at a new (production) IP address, or do I need to blow it away, and install in place?

I'm afraid this is truly kicking my face in

I have gone through the files and verified the correct IP addresses are there, and I've also gone through the How-To on what to do after installing ISPConfig 2.x, at least to the point of trying to create a site, and I have little to show for it but error messages.

Is it possible that my original server installation hostname shouldn't have taken the hostname of my main site I'm trying to launch? If so, I am sure that I can change the server hostname, but so far, I am unable to get any response to http requests at the primary site name, but I can ping by name and get response, and I can browse by IP address and get the shared hosting page from ISPConfig.

When I go through the site setup, it informs me that "www.example.com" is already in use (and this is for a first site setup/configuration), but I can't browse to anything resembling a site, only an error page after timeout.

What do I get and for how much with the Enterprise support paid package? As much as I'd really like to learn how to do this, I have to move forward, one way or another.

That's right. You can change the hostname like this:

It's EUR 35 for every started 30 minutes. But Till has a serious flu, so he won't be available before next week.

 

I have uninstalled ISPConfig, dropped the database, and changed the hostname, edited the hostname in all of the right places, and started (almost from scratch) over. Rebooted, just to be sure, I then re-installed ISPConfig with the new hostname, and went through the How-To for the initial setup, and I still can't browse my site by name.

Again, I can ping my public IP address and I can't ping by name (but the ping does resolve to the correct IP address), and browsing by IP address produces the ISPConfig shared hosting page. Browsing by name produces a "Connection interrupted" error, but no web page.

I can also connect via ftp to the IP address, so ProFTP is working ok, and the webftp works from within the ISPConfig control panel, and I can log into the webmail, which apparently works, but don't receive anything I send from it.

What can I do to fix my problem? I just need to get a website with webmail up that can be managed with a web interface. Is there a better way to do this? If I can just get it to respond to requests by name, that would be a good start, and apparently my nemesis...

Allen15, how did you end up getting around the error you were originally encountering? The output you posted is the same as what I am currently getting. I can't tell if it is indeed because of a problem with my echo command, or if something else is going wrong.

I am pretty sure step 9 was successful for me. "echo $SHELL" prints "/bin/bash" for me. What else should I be trying at this point?
