I had exactly the same issue (PHP error at end, similar messages), and though I swore I followed the howto to the tee, I did miss one line in my copy/paste when installing 8.04. I re-did the install, this time checking off each line on paper with a pen, and it all worked. Some lines are similar, and sometimes we think we did it, but missed it... Try again, the howto does work... I have my perfect server Ubuntu 8.04 working after the howto.... PS I did the whole install 3 times, first failed, second worked, and to be sure, I tried third, and it worked too... First and second were on same PC, third install was on different PC PPS, I was missing some libraries in first install. I did load them manually, and the ISPConfig compile worked, but I was not sure of the whole system, that's why I re-did it all...
