    hi,
i bought my son a gpc thinking its cheap comp for him to play games on and when he puts starcraft disk in ...he doesnt seem to know how to get the game installed so he can log onto battlenet and play it ...we have never used linux and i didnt realize the comp had GOS on it he actually hasnt done anything with the comp as he doesnt even know where to start ...
so when using cd drive it takes u to add/remove programs so he says ..what do you do to actually get game installed and play it?

ummm you have to install this in order to install games from Cd`s?
im beginning to think its easier to just go buy windows and delete GOS since GOS doesnt offer much support for people who have never even seen other than windows ...
dont know where to start in order to learn this system

    I'm with you

can you imagine putting out an operating system with no documentation???
I'd like to understand what's going on here but all linux people seam to be 'experts' speaking a strange language. and qc??? forget about it...

I don't think you were Windows experts right away when you got your first Windows PC. You had to learn Windows first. I don't understand why people feel disappointed when they see that they have to invest a small amount of time to get used to Linux...

    don't get me wrong...

i am open to this idea of freedom software. i have just perused 'linux for dummies' and it explained a lot and i ordered a copy of 'utdubu/ linux for dummies' to try to understand a little more. i have gone through your excellent tutorial twice. this doesn't change the fact that it would be nice if there was a manual that explained the options in this operating system.
i bought this computer solely to get on the internet and check gmail and it does that perfectly, but watching a .wmv video has become a 3 week challenge and i still can't get a straight answer from the tech support people.
i have learned that vcl will open and play a .wmv file but when i receive one in an email and i click on download i'm asked 'what should firefox do with this file?' the options are 'movie player(default)' or 'other'.
if you choose 'other' the 'choose helper application screen' opens. here is the rub... how do you find vlc????? where is it??? i've searched everywhere!!! i know it's there somewhere and i feel really stupid cause i can't find it.... but i can't... HELP!!!

    p.s. next is my ipod

The blame for you not being able play wmv straight out of the box should be laid at M$'s doorstep as this is not an open format, best advise use the other open formats to encode your audio and video, but well you need to play your videos so here is vlc http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ you should also be able to play using mplayer with the win32 codecs.

I know your trying to help and I appreciate it....

but that's the problem. You are a MASTER and I'm a newbie and I don't have the slightest idea of what 'mplayer with win32 codex' means. where do I find this? How do I load it? i went to the vlc website which directed me to use sympatic to load the software. I reloaded it and nothing seems to work.

    what's a newbie to do?
