Oddest thing... I have one site on the server. I am using Firefox Thunderbird to collect mail. It recognizes the imap server, and the password too, but still won't send mail. This is what I have: mail.example.com pointing to public IP in ISPConfig 3 (A record). I did an IP lookup of mail.example.com and my IP was correctly resolved. In the "Monitor", the only error I am receiving is DNS "offline" How can this be? The site loads fine. How could there be DNS errors yet the only site loads? No error logs in mail. How does the IP resolve, Thunderbird recognizes the address and password, but no mail can be sent?
Please post the exact messages that get added to the file /var/log/mail.log when you try to send a email. A common problem with thunderbird is that it saves a wrong username in the smtp settings when you create a account. Please open thunderbird account settings, go to smtp and check the usersername in the smtp settings. The username must be the full email address and not just the part in front of the @ sign.

Still strange when the site loads beautifully everytime and the nameservers are showing in ip lookups great, etc.
I did check this and correct it in Thunderbird, adding @hostwithsupport.com. Still end up with this error: Login to server mail.hostwithsupport.com failed (password) I know that password is accurate too. Thanks in advance
According to the above log, thunderbird has never connected to that server between 10:10 and 10:55. So the reson for your problem is either a wrong dns record or a wrong smtp server name or you did not try to connect in that timespan. Then the dns server does not listen on localhost as required by ispconfig.
I am curious as to how localhost does not listen when the site loads through ISPConfig set-up? Does this make sense? It needs to be able to in order to load the website, which it is doing rather well. What record would I need to change to add the DNS records? /etc/hosts has them included, but this is Linux, not ISPConfig specifically. Should I point smtp.example.com to the WAN public IP? This does not depend on each other. Apache can work fine while bind does not listen on localhost. It is just slower to resolve domain names. All DNS records that require A IP have to point to the external IP address.
