OK. after following Falko's howto Virtual Users And Domains With Postfix, Courier, MySQL And SquirrelMail (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) several times I have finally got some real results.
    I can log into phpmyadmin.
I can create a domain and a user.
I can send a welcome mail using mailx, and it is recieved.
I can log into squirrelmail and see the welcome email

I can send an email to that address from an external account and it is received.
    BUT.
I cannot send emails from that account.

using: less /var/log/mail.log I see that it cant resolve the domain names.
I am using a D-Link DSL 504T 4-port adsl modem router and I have added port forwarding by adding the following server rules to static IP 10.1.1.55 (my mail server):
    SMTP port 25
    POP3 port 110
    IMAP ports 143, 585, 993
all these are TCP (not UDP)

the bit that I think is the clue is
I have my name server listed as 10.1.1.1 (my router) is this correct, should it maybe be the name server of my ISP or the name server of my DNS host (my DNS is hosted by the same place that the domain name is registered with).

If I do need to change this name server value, could any helpers please include places where I need to change it.

    Thanx in advance.
    Cheers

Please edit the file /etc/resolv.conf and make sure that the nameserver listed in that file is reachable from your server. Use e.g. the nameserver of your cable access provider.
