Keep folders/icons arranged in a certain pattern? (Nautilus or Gnome Desktop)

I have a group of folders on my desktop arranged in a certain pattern as a visual aid. They are starting to take up a lot of space. I would like to either:

Put them in a folder, and have them in the right positions when I open it. Nautilus doesn't seem to have that option. (Also good enough is a different file manager that does have that option
    or
have a second workspace (desktop, workplace) that has just those folders on it. Right now in gnome everything is the same in both workspaces, and a change in one is made in the other.
I'd prefer the second solution, there are other things I would like to do if I could do that.

I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty. For security reasons I don't want to use any online storage option.
    Thanks...
