I have no idea what has happened, but after rebooting I get this during the boot:

Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)

I did not even touch anything with kernel so I have no idea why I'm getting this.

Did you change sth. in the bootloaderconfig or fstab?

No, as I said "I did not even touch anything with kernel so I have no idea why I'm getting this."

Did you have automatic updates turned on? Maybe one of the updates is not playing so nicely...

Very strange. But if your problem is that you can't move from this situation, which distro do you use? You can use a "rescue cd, or floppy", boot and check what's wrong; you can recompile your kernel and so on; you can do what you want / need :)
