Like most people I know, the pain of running a small business lies usually in getting a decent accounting package, especially if you travel a lot. A web based accounting system thus makes sense as long as it's safe, well supported and done by people that don't mind giving the occasional bit of advice. I've been following the forums on various accounting packages for a long while, and I found the people from LedgerSMB to be both very active and supportive. They react very quickly to bugs, talk sense and appear very committed. Here's the "but": they are so busy fixing the broken code they've inherited that they presently spend very little time documenting things. Frankly, I don't think it's their specialism like it is for the people on this site . So, the question is: would it be possible to create a HOWTO on setting up LedgerSMB on a number of platforms? At the moment Ubuntu seems to be the obvious choice, but I'm OK with Fedora or OpenSuSE as well - as long as it allows online updates. In a small business a server is also likely to run other services (such as firewall, mail server, public web server) so maybe some attention to locking down that LedgerSMB session to SSL access only, localhost and the local network only would be worth discussing as well. It's, um, TOO simple . LSMB is the full shebang: it's a multi-user, multilingual and (if so desired) multi company accounting package - it's not just invoices.. I'll put it behind a VPN, but it allows me to have access to my accounts from anywhere, and I can employ someone who doesn't like traveling (or is disabled) to work on the books. Anyway, I think I'll compile it from the ground up, the RPM version seems very much Redhat forcused..
