Just out of interest who here has made their own Linux distro from scratch by compiling all the packages?
why would anyone do that? or do you mean: Do a minimal installation of some distro and start compiling tarbals?
You only do stuff like this for schooling/teaching reasons and some probably did it. ( I used the lfs documentation in the past, but never finished my own system. ) There are projects like http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ or the manual Installation of gentoo: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1 which aim directly into these directions. Using it in production is a total different story.
