I set up an email mailbox, but what is the username when connecting with a mail client? I only have an email address and an alias. What am I missing?

You need to add the email address through the ISPConfig web-interface.
At same point you will also assign the password credentials in webinterface.

I added an email Mailbox in the ISPConfig web interface, but that only has an alias, an email, and a password. Where is the username?

The email address is the username.

In that case, can someone help me figure out why it cannot connect? the mail server is mail.mydomain.com, which is resolving to the server. I tried entering the email for the username and the password, and it said there was an error logging in. Any ideas for how to troubleshoot?

are you sure that you entered the full email address? The username is e.g. "[email protected]" and not just "tom". If you use thunderbird, then check the username again, thunderbird has a bug that removes the @domain.tld part of the username.
