Sunday was a bad day... I had one debian Lenny master dedicated server controlling a debian Lenny virtual machine at a data centre. The virtual slave hung and on reboot couldn't get past the grub loader. I was told there seemed significant damage to the file system. As a result they created me a new virtual machine using the same name and same ip with the intention to get this working as if it were the original machine and attach the old hard drive to it to try and recover data. The installation of ispconfig slave seemed to go well on the new machine. It is now added to the control panel alongside the old machine that is now off line. My first question is how do I completely remove the old machine when it's not there to communicate with? The new machine has two services offline. Smtp and mysql server. Mysql does appear to be working despite what's in the control panel. How should I start to problem shoot smtp? Squirrel mail also complains of no smtp stream when sending mail. Thanks In advance.
Good point. That folder is completely empty. I guess something hadn't installed. I used the perfect guide for Lenny with courier and my dns. If that folder is empty, is it courier or postfix or another that didn't install properly?

having restarted mysql the control panel has now gone green, but squirrel mail still won't send mail. it just hangs. Just created A new slave and joiined it to the master using expert mode. The data centre said they would connect the old hard drive to the new vm, but I don't think they meant to integrate withthe new os, just to retrieve data. I think. Thanks Falko I dont know if it's running chrooted, how do I find out? I certainly didn't set anything up that wasn't in the perfect Lenny with courier and mydns guide. I can only guess I've missed a step out maybe. Everything else works fine. Apache interacts with mysql no problems.

I can - and I believe it has fixed it! I had to copy the setting to the other .cf files before the mail started working. It also gave me a clue as to where I went wrong - Initially mysql server was shown as not working and having retraced the guide I think I'd left a line out here: Code: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.0.100 server1.example.com server1 # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters ff02::3 ip6-allhosts Of course, postfix had already been set up prior to the change.
