Hey! I am running ispconfig 3.1.15p2 on a ubuntu 16.04 VPS. Since 16.04 is no longer maintained i want to move to 20.04. I tried do-dist-upgrade but the upgrade process failed so i am interested if there is any way to backup ispconfig data (config/websites/clients/ssl/etc) copy this to my own PC rebuild the vps to be a 20.04 version and after that copy the backup data to the VPS, install ispconfig and restore everything. Is there a document that helps with this process? What to backup and stuff? If this is possible my other question would be that do i need to have the same version of ispconfig installed when restoring my old data? Btw this is a multi server setup. One server for the websites,database and another one for mailing. The one i want to upgrade is the one with the websites, databases. Many thanks, Trix
With ISPConfig Migration tool you can copy all data from old system to new. But both the old and new system must be running at the same time for the migration to do its job. https://www.ispconfig.org/add-ons/ispconfig-migration-tool/ It is possible to backup all websites, e-mail boxes etc. from ISPConfig and then manually transfer them to another system, but all the client accounts, users and e-mail accounts would need to be created first (manually). This is workable if there is only a small amount of clients and accounts. There may be ways to directly restore the database backup to another ISPConfig, but I do not know about this way of doing things. ISPConfig Business support migth do this for you for a fee. Note that on a multiserver ISPConfig system all nodes must run the same version of ISPConfig. Since you are hosting the ISPConfig servers on virtual machines, you could clone them and experiment with the Ubuntu upgrade. Note that Ubuntu only supports LTS upgrade to the next version, not directly from 16.04 to 20.04. Users on this forum have done Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 and 18.04 to 20.04 upgrades, so it should work. If you can not do the Migration Toolkit way, I would experiment with the Ubuntu dist upgrades.
Thank you Taleman for your answer. The problem is that i cant use the migration tool cause i need to keep my IP address and since my VPS is hosted on digital ocean that wont work. Seeing the complexity of a manual restore i will try to udate my ubuntu. Thanks again!
Note that Ubuntu 20.04 isn't supported on your old ispconfig version, you should update in to the latest version before you begin your os upgrades. (As a side benefit, several high severity security vulnerabilities will be fixed as well.)
